January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve caused by various eye conditions, is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in people over 40. Increased pressure in the eyes is typically associated with glaucoma and can rapidly increase the disease’s progression. With minimal early symptoms, many people are unaware that they have glaucoma until it is too late. While this disease can’t be cured, some steps can be taken to manage the effects.

Attend Regular Eye Exams

Glaucoma can’t be prevented, but early detection can help to minimize the detrimental effects. Your doctor can help detect any signs of the disease and provide tips on managing and reducing the progression properly.

Know your Family History

This disease is genetic, so being aware of your family history will help you know your risk. Talk to your relatives about their health history so that you are prepared for potential diseases you might face.

Wear Protective Eyewear

If you are out in the sun, wear sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays. If swimming, be sure to wear goggles to prevent harmful chemicals or saltwater from getting in your eyes.

Exercise

Remaining active helps many aspects of health, including your eyes. Get moving at least 3-4 times a week.

Support

Since glaucoma can cause blindness and does not have a cure, it can be frightening. Therefore, if you are helping a loved one with this disease, be sure to reassure them that it is treatable and can be managed with proper care.
